Nationally Accredited Center

What is MBSAQIP Accreditation?

CSSMCW is proud that our bariatric surgical center is accredited as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP®), a joint program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).

MBSAQIP sets national standards for bariatric surgery centers with a goal of advancing safe and high-quality care for bariatric surgery patients. A bariatric surgical center achieves accreditation following a rigorous review process during which it proves that it can maintain certain physical resources, human resources, and standards of practice.

What does accreditation mean to me?

This accreditation means that our bariatric surgical program meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care, and is indicative of our commitment to a high level of bariatric care.

Some insurance plans require accreditation or they will not cover the benefits for the surgery. By performing surgical procedures at an MBSAQIP-accredited center, patients with Medicare, Medicaid, UPMC Health Plan, and many other insurance plans can have their surgery here at CSSMCW.

Additionally, many studies have shown that surgery performed in an accredited center is safer and more effective. All accredited sites must report results to a certified data base and must maintain clinical pathways and procedure volumes that have been shown to improve results. By offering comprehensive services to all patients and tracking and analyzing data, CSSMCW’s program promotes safety and provides patients with support to enhance success.
