Start GIVING today – become a Volunteer!

Every day, everywhere in the hospital, volunteers add to the caring environment at Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber, helping patients and their families at a stressful and sometimes frightening time in their lives. By volunteering your time, you help give back to your community and make our hospital a friendlier, more welcoming place to everyone who steps foot on our campus. All volunteers (must be 18 or older) are carefully screened, trained, given appropriate assignments, and required to follow hospital policies and procedures. The screening process includes background checks, health screening, an interview, and orientation training. We take the time to do it right in order to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and families. The screening and training process also gives the volunteer the confidence needed for a successful experience.

A specific assignment will be determined based on your interests, availability, application status, a personal interview, and our most pressing needs at the time of your interview.

Hospice Volunteers

For many people, the thought of being with someone who is dying is somewhat uncomfortable. Yet those who do take up the challenge find the experience to be among life’s most rewarding.

Windber Hospice volunteers are extraordinary people and vital members of the hospice care team. The volunteer program begins with an in-depth training program that helps them to understand hospice care, the needs of the terminally ill, those who care for them and the volunteer’s role in providing hospice care and support.

In the field, volunteers visit patient’s homes to get to know them, spend quality time with them and to assist family members and caregivers with emotional support and any practical help they may need.

Positions include:

  • Home Care
  • Facilities
  • Windber Hospice Inpatient Unit
  • Bereavement Services
  • Pastoral Care, Education
  • Fundraising
  • Clerical
  • Special Services (i.e. sewing, lawn care, home repair, photography, baking)
