Investment in the Community

Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber’s investment in and dedication to the local community continues with the development of their Cardiac Catheterization Lab – extending their abilities to provide therapeutic coronary interventions. This allows the hospital to provide an acute myocardial infarction patient life-saving, immediate emergent angioplasty and stenting, eliminating treatment delays encountered when being transported to another facility. Patients with advanced coronary artery disease can schedule their elective procedure conveniently, close to home, and without the stressors of travel, time, and availability of larger facilities.

Safety

According to the American College of Cardiology National Cardiovascular Data Registry, outcomes of over 300,000 patients treated at hospitals with PCI and off-site surgical backup substantiate the safety of this practice. This analysis echoes the outcomes of prior studies such as CPORT-Elective, where 18,000 patents were randomized to undergo PCI at hospitals with and without on-site cardiac surgery, respectively. Mortality and major adverse cardiac events did not differ statistically between the groups. The ACC further states that positive outcomes occur where rigorous clinical, operator, and institutional criteria are in place and are monitored to ensure high-quality outcomes.

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab at CSSMCW, has met all PA Department of Health-defined program development requirements focused on facility, equipment, leadership, physicians and staff (nurses and technologists), policies and procedures, appropriateness, quality, radiation safety, and tertiary backup. CSSMCW is reporting all patient outcomes to the ACC-NCDR registry and has a detailed quality improvement program in place. A quarterly review of registry data and yearly reaccreditation process will ensure the Cardiac Catheterization Lab’s strong programmatic infrastructure and quality outcomes.
