PICC Line Insertion Now Available at Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber

Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber’s Ambulatory Surgery nurses Carly Cooper and Tina Krupa have recently been trained by Angiodynamics in the insertion of PICC lines. A PICC or peripherally inserted central catheter is inserted for short or long term IV access. This procedure allows the patient to maintain their lifestyle while receiving the needed treatments. The catheter can be used for extended administration of antibiotics, blood, chemotherapy, medication, or nutrition. Utilizing ultrasound guidance the nurses are able to insert the catheter at the bedside.

Patients using a PICC line have less discomfort and less complications from this procedure than other more invasive procedures. While PICC insertions are not a new procedure in healthcare, Windber Medical Center now has the ability to provide this service to our patients in our facility.
