What is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome?

  • A patient with obstructive sleep apnea repeatedly stops breathing during sleep. Such individuals sleep poorly and feel tired and sleepy during daytime.
  • Many health problems have been linked OSA including high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythm and depression.
  • Obstructive sleep apnea can cause many symptoms including excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, frequent nighttime awakenings, snoring, choking and gasping during sleep, restless sleep, difficulty concentrating, and morning headaches.

At Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber sleep lab, we provide the following sleep studies (polysomnography):

  • Diagnostic polysomnography
  • Continuous positive airway pressure titration polysomnography
  • Split night polysomnography (Combination of Diagnostic and CPAP Titration in one night stay)
  • Multiple sleep latency tests (MSLT) which include an overnight polysomnography and subsequent daytime 4-5 nap tests. It is performed to provide objective documentation of daytime sleepiness and to assist in narcolepsy diagnosis.

What is a sleep study and what should you expect during a sleep study?

A sleep study is a test that examines your quality of sleep and it provides necessary information for your physician to accurately diagnose and treat your sleep disorder.

You will spend one night in a private room with a private bathroom at the sleep lab. During the night, data is collected including brain waves, heart rate, air flow, respiratory efforts, muscle activity and video monitoring. All sensors placed on your body are noninvasive and allow you to turn and move as you normally do while sleeping.

After your night at the sleep lab a board-certified sleep specialist analyzes the data collected. A detailed report is prepared that will help your physician diagnose and treat the identified sleep disorders.

The benefits of OSA diagnosis and therapy far outweigh the inconvenience of testing:

Did you know that loud snoring, breathing pauses during sleep (witnessed apneas), daytime sleepiness or fatigue, difficulties with concentration and short-term memory, choking/gasping during sleep and restless disturbed sleep could be due to a serious but treatable health problem called obstructive sleep apnea OSA?

Please talk to your physician if you have any of the above symptoms.

At Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber sleep lab, we accommodate all referred patients who are 14 years and older.

A physician referral is necessary in order to have any type of sleep testing performed at our sleep lab.
