1. What is your specialty?
My specialty is general surgery and I perform both upper and lower GI endoscopy.
2. Why did you want to become a Physician?
I was a paramedic in the Philadelphia region for 10 years in the 1980s-1990s and wanted to further my medical career in order to help people further. I initially planned on becoming an ER physician from the onset of medical school, but after doing my general surgery rotations I found this field challenging and enjoyable in that one can see immediate results from helping someone in need.
3. What is one aspect of the job that you find rewarding?
I enjoy being able to help patients who have immediate need for a procedure or surgery in order to alleviate their pain and distress and to treat their surgical/medical issues.
4. In your opinion, what’s the future of your field?
My field is changing on a continuing basis with improved new ways to perform procedures. I believe performing surgery is much safer today than it was 40-50 years ago because of these constant improvements, in addition to significant improvements and developments in the field of anesthesia and everyone involved (surgeons, anesthesia personnel, medical specialists, and the patient’s primary care physician all acting together with the primary goal of caring for that specific patient). No two patients are the same and it takes interactive participation by all involved to obtain this primary goal. I believe the field of surgery will continue to improve over the coming years, but one must always keep the time honored “basics” in mind.
5. What do you do to achieve work/life balance?
I always strive to remember to make time for myself and family and keep myself as healthy, both mentally and physically, as possible with activities outside of the hospital and the field of medicine/surgery.
