Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber (CSSMCW) is pleased to announce the appointment of Elliot L. Smith, MD, as the organization’s new Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
Dr. Smith, a board-certified Internal Medicine physician, joined WindberCare Physicians in 2023 and has become a trusted provider known for his dedication to patient-centered care and clinical excellence. In his new role as CMO, Dr. Smith will provide strategic clinical leadership, working closely with hospital administration and medical staff to advance quality, safety, and patient experience initiatives.
Dr. Smith will also continue to care for patients through WindberCare Physicians, ensuring continuity of care for his current and future patients.

Dr. Smith undertook his medical education at Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his Internal Medicine residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He brings more than 30 years of experience in patient care and healthcare leadership experience.
Prior to joining WindberCare Physicians, Dr. Smith served as a pioneer in innovative care models focused on improving quality while lowering the cost of healthcare in the Pittsburgh region. A native of Johnstown, Dr. Smith returned home to support those same efforts; to improve healthcare access, foster collaboration across the care team, and support initiatives that enhance both patient and healthcare team member’s satisfaction.
