Windber Medical Center came to be in 1906—built by the Berwind Coal Company to provide medical services to their workers and families in what was once the “company town” of Windber. Until the 1980’s Windber was in the heart of the Appalachian coal fields. Mining-related respiratory problems like black lung were common and the hospital has a long history of expertise treating respiratory problems. Today, top physicians and surgeons are part of the WindberCare Respiratory Medicine Department—delivering a wide range of care for breathing problems and maladies of the lungs. |
