The Therapeutic Music program at Windber Medical Center has a patient centered approach and the use of live music at the bedside focuses on the needs of the patient. It is not entertainment, but is tailored specifically to each individual and their changing needs. Unlike music therapy, nothing is expected of the patient, it is not necessary for them to interact physically or verbally during a therapeutic music session. Research has shown even unconscious or comatose patients can benefit from live therapeutic music. Therapeutic Music is utilized at Windber with many types of patients including those who are acutely ill or injured, the chronically ill, the critically ill, those suffering from dementia, birthing mothers, the comatose and the dying.

Music for Healing and Transition Program

Live music at the bedside is a therapeutic enhancement to the healing process and the life/death transition. Music is a universal language and applied live at the bedside can address the needs of the patient. The therapeutic musician carefully chooses musical selections in response to patients needs as defined by patient and/or assessed by staff.

Physiological mechanisms in response to carefully chosen musical selections help to alleviate pain, anxiety, nausea and induce sleep. It also allows for expression of feelings and can enhance mood and feeling of well being.

The Clavinova Connection

A Recreational Music Making program developed to optimize wellness through the enhancement of the immune, nervous and the endocrine system. Designed for adults who are non-musical as well as those interested in keyboard music, this group learning opportunity emphasizes non-musical outcomes.

Creative stimulation in a low pressure supportive environment incorporates breathing, gentle movement, visualization and awareness exercises. These are designed to improve posture, body mechanics and reducing arthritic and/or soft tissue pain in the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands and fingers. They can also reduce or prevent back pain, muscle spasms and gait problems. The entire Recreational Music Making protocols has evidence-based research in reversing the biological markers of stress and boosting the immune system. Musical instruments as tools of wellness open up creative expression that can unite our bodies, minds and spirits.
