Few therapies reflect the “high touch” side of WindberCare more than Reiki.  Reiki is a traditional Japanese form of comfort and healing that compliments other medical treatments.  Reiki can accelerate healing, ease emotional distress, improve energy levels, promote sound sleep and provides a sense of calm and well-being and especially beneficial as part of Windber Hospice Palliative Care.  Reiki is practiced in all areas of the hospital—from the emergency room and intensive care to outpatient clinics and of course, in the Institute of Integrative Health.

Reiki therapy sessions are not only beneficial but are also simple, relaxing and enjoyable.   The recipient lies, fully-clothed, on a comfortable massage table while a trained Reiki practitioner uses gentle touch to relax the mind and body.

Some may be skeptical about such an exotic form of therapy, but consider how important the human touch is to our emotional health.  Couples hug and hold hands, loved ones gently stroke and hold family members who are in pain or despair, brushing the hair of an elderly person brings them comfort, survivors of disasters find comfort in embrace.  Touch is a powerful sense and its ability to heal and comfort is immense.
