Linda Fanale and Patricia Felton among those honored by YWCA for community service

The YWCA of Greater Johnstown will honor nine women from the area for their contributions to the community during the 26th annual Tribute to Women on May 31. Honorees are nominated by their peers, who submit a biography about the nominee and her contributions. A selection committee reviews the biographies with the names removed and makes selections based on the merits of the information provided. the recipients from Windber Medical Center are Linda Fanale, Business; and Patricia Felton, Nonprofit.

Girls Night Out draws crowd to fight cancer

Nearly 800 women packed the Pasquerilla Conference Center on Tuesday evening to fight breast cancer during the sixth annual Taunia Oechslin Girls Night Out Gala.

The women also took the Pink Pledge – a promiseR00;to get annual mammograms, have a breast examination performed by their physician and conduct self-breast examinations monthly.

Bariatric Surgery May Outrank Standard Diabetes Treatment

Bariatric surgery performed considerably better than traditional medical therapy for obese patients with type 2 diabetes, independent of weight loss, according to findings from 2 randomized trials published online March 26 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

'What are the odds?': Somerset County couple welcome 'leapling' baby

Feb. 29 wasn't a busy day in the maternity units of area hospitals, but a few babies decided to make their appearance.

The Leap Year babies join a select number of people who age very slowly – celebrating actual birthdays only once every four years.

At Windber Medical Center, an air traffic controller for the U.S. Air Force welcomed her first child shortly after midnight.

Ron Corl honored by Windber Medical Center

Windber Medical Center paid tribute to veterans and a past board member, Ron Corl, who is also a veteran on Thursday night at the Windber American Legion.

Rep. Mark Critz was the keynote speaker at the event, which also promoted the hospital's VeteranCare Service. Critz said he felt honored that he was invited to be the speaker.

Windber Home Health Agency announced that it has been named to the 2011 HomeCare Elite™, a compilation of the top-performing home health agencies in the United States. The HomeCare Elite identifies the top 25 percent of agencies and further highlights the top 100 and top 500 agencies overall. Winners are ranked by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, process measure implementation, and financial performance.

'It has a special place in my heart': Physician assistant leaves military hospital and joins breast cancer fight

After working for 10 years at premier military hospitals in major metropolitan areas, Heather Johnston is embracing the different world she has found as a physician assistant at Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center in Windber. "It's a nice feeling; kind of like a small-family feeling amongst everyone." The family atmosphere extends to Windber's regular patients, she added.

Donation to Breast Care Center from a Christmas in July Basket Party

on Tuesday October 25th, a check in the amount of $6,000 was presented to the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center from a Christmas in July Basket Party co-chaired by the late Wendy Spencer and Carol Burnworth. This special donation was presented by Carol Burnworth and Wendy’s husband Robert and mother Bea Hollern. Wendy Spencer was a breast cancer advocate, fundraiser, and strong supporter of the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center. She lost her battle to breast cancer earlier this month on October 8, 2011

Panera Bread Goes Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

All during the month of October, an area restaurant chain is offering its customers in Johnstown and Altoona the chance to enjoy a special treat and help in the fight against breast cancer at the same time.
