A Place of Peace and Healing

Caring Approach
Receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer is a traumatic experience.  Fighting the disease
takes every last ounce of effort, fortitude and courage a person has.  At the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center we understand that struggle and use every weapon available to keep our patients healthy and to return them to both physical and mental well-being.  The Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center perfectly reflects WindberCare’s Planetree philosophy of
treating the whole person—body, mind and spirit.

Treatment and Prevention
At the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center, women have access to the region’s most
advanced imaging technology.  Digital Mammography and Ultrasound are available and
are performed by highly skilled technicians with years of experience in breast imaging.  Computer aided detection (CAD) assists radiologists interpreting mammograms.  Women who are at high risk for breast cancer are offered additional diagnostics such as Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) close to home.  Minimally invasive biopsies using ultrasound, MRI and Stereotactic techniques are performed on-site providing accurate results with minimal discomfort to the patient.  Bone density testing is available for the early detection and diagnosis of osteoporosis.

In addition to the power of advanced techniques and technology, the Joyce Murtha
Breast Care Center focuses on decreasing a person’s risk of getting breast cancer and
also recognizes the importance of helping patients fight cancer by maintaining a positive,
hopeful attitude—scientifically proven to improve recovery rates.  The Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center offers its patients and their families education, resources and programs to
help patients understand the disease along with treatment options and day-to-day concerns.  Mind/Body counseling is available and helps women to overcome their fears
and concerns.  The Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Clinic exists to identify individuals and families at increased risk of cancer for the purpose of promoting awareness, early
detection and prevention.

Forging the Frontiers of Women’s Health Care
The Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center at Windber Medical Center and the Windber
Research Institute are working together to develop a new dimension of care that is highly personalized, predictive, and proactive. The concept is called "Translational Medicine"—in which genetic research is translated into a practical clinical application.  The Translational Medicine Model is a collaborative effort of the WindberCare family and unites the clinical capabilities of patients, nurses and clinicians with the research capabilities of scientists, research assistants, and multiple other personnel.
