On November 1st, 2013, Governor Corbett signed the Breast Density Notification Act, making Pennsylvania the 17th state to require notification to patients of their breast density. Each screening mammography report sent to the healthcare provider and the notification letter to the patient will include the patient’s breast density information. Statistics show many women could have dense or highly dense breasts. Dense breast tissue can make it harder to find cancer on a mammogram and may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. This information is given to patients to raise awareness and to inform conversations with their physician. Effective date for this law is February 1, 2014.
