Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center > Our Surgeon

Board-certified surgeon Dianna Craig, MD, FACS, specializes in diseases of the breast.  She is the Medical Director of the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center and serves as the local Principal Investigator on several research studies involving breast cancer, high risk patients, and breast cancer vaccine protocols. Dr. Craig was the recipient of the Spirit of Planetree Physician Champion Award in 2008 for demonstrating the Planetree model of patient-centered care and for serving as a role model for other medical staff members.  She is highly regarded by the medical community and adored by her many patients.

Dr. Craig's office is conveniently located in the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center allowing her patients to have their mammography and ultrasound studies performed the same day as their appointment.  At the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center we realize that one of the greatest fears for a woman is that she may have breast cancer.  It is no longer necessary to go to the operating room to diagnose a breast abnormality.  Dr. Craig performs almost all breast biopsies at the center using minimally invasive biopsy procedures under local anesthesia requiring no stitches and causing minimal discomfort.  Because we understand the anxiety of waiting for a diagnosis we often perform biopsies on the same day your abnormality is discovered.  Recovery is fast and an appointment is made for review of the biopsy results within a few days.

A cancer operation is very different from a surgical breast biopsy.  Having a diagnosis of breast cancer prior to surgery is of the utmost importance in planning the surgical procedure.  Dr. Craig always informs patients fully of the indications for surgery and all the alternatives.  You are considered a valued partner in the decision process regarding your care.  At the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center our holistic approach lowers stress and creates a positive attitude leading to better outcomes.

Dr. Craig has extensive experience in the techniques of modern breast cancer surgery, including sentinel lymph node biopsy along with insertion of the MammoSite® and Savi® radiation therapy systems used for brachytherapy treatment in women with early stage breast cancer who want to conserve the breast and decrease her radiation treatment schedule.  We coordinate your adjuvant therapy appointments with Medical and Radiation Oncology and assist you with choosing the best consultants to precisely fit your individual needs.  Your dedicated breast care team is here to assist you in all aspects of your cancer care.  We communicate with consultants on a regular basis and refer patients as needed for additional services, such as high risk intervention.
